However, due to results going in their favour in the last ProTour event, they secured their spots in the 64-player tournament at Butlins’ Minehead – but only by a few thousand pounds.

Humphries, who could lose his world No1 spot to Luke Littler in the coming weeks, exited in the second round 6-4 to world No58 Rob Owen at the Robin Park Leisure Centre in Wigan.

Cool Hand Luke came 58th in the table with £28,000 to his name, only £1,500 above the cut-off mark for the event in Somerset.

Scottish thrower Wright, 55, fared better in the overall table in 51st with a total of £29,500 but he had a senior moment in his 6-3 first exit to Unheralded Pole Tytus Kanik.

It was revenge for the Canadian, who was thumped 6-0 by The Nuke in New York last year, and then 4-1 in sets in their first meeting, in the third round of the PDC World Darts Championship at Ally Pally in December 2023.

Dutchman Wessel Nijman beat Englishman Luke Woodhouse 8-5 in the final of Players Championship 34 to move into second spot overall.

And this rejigging of the standings means Humphries will take on newly-crowned European champion Gian van Veen in the first round of the Players Championship Finals.
