Here’s what you need to know about tonight’s matchup, the NFL Week 9 schedule, how to watch Sunday Night Football, this week’s TV lineup and more.
Jacory Croskey-Merritt has become the Commanders’ go-to running back after an offseason filled with high expectations for the rookie.
After his breakout performance in Week 5, rushing for 111 yards and two touchdowns against the Chargers, Washington’s running game has faltered in consecutive losses. “Bill” is averaging just 3.1 yards per carry in those three games, heavily impacted by negative game script and poor offensive performances overall. He rushed for just 25 yards on nine carries in Week 8.
With Jayden Daniels back in the lineup, this could be the spark Croskey-Merritt and the Commanders’ offense needs to get going.
Daniels looked sharp before the setbacks, throwing eight touchdowns to one pick while adding 211 yards on the ground. But with the Commanders (3-5) riding a three-game skid, his margin for error is thin. Dan Quinn’s defense has struggled to keep opponents under 25 points, and Washington’s offense hasn’t looked the same without Daniels’ mobility to bail out broken plays.
In the backfield, Jacory Croskey-Merritt (7th round pick out of Arizona) has taken over as RB1 for Brian Robinson Jr., who was traded to the 49ers in August. Croskey-Merritt leads Washington in carries (82), rushing yards (402) and rushing TD (4). He is the only Commander with multiple rushing TD this season.
Croskey-Merritt has started the last four games. In his first career start (Week 5 win at the Chargers), he had 14 carries with career highs in rushing yards (111) and rushing touchdowns (2). He became the first Commander with 100+ rushing yards and 2+ rushing touchdowns in a game since Antonio Gibson in 2020.
“Jayden will be back and we’re all pumped for that,” Quinn said.
Washington, beset by injuries all season, has already ruled out wide receiver Terry McLaurin (quad) for Sunday’s critical game against the Seahawks (5-2), who share first place in the NFC West with Los Angeles Rams.
Daniels, the AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year last season, led Washington to a surprising 12-5 regular-season record and the franchise’s first NFC championship game appearance since 1991.
Washington opened the season with three wins in its first five games, but has been slowed by injuries since.
Daniels has thrown for 1,031 yards and eight touchdown passes with one interception in five games, though his completion percentage has dropped to 61% after finishing at 69% last season. The Commanders are 1-2 without Daniels, who was sidelined the third and fourth weeks of the season with a knee injury. Washington has dropped four of five games without McLaurin, a 2024 second-team All-Pro.
