Fall may still be in full swing, but the crisp air has the weather hinting to winter already.

Temperatures this autumn have been a flux of warm, sunny days and chilly, cloudy stretches. This may lead to a few questions: What will winter bring, and how can I help those who struggle to stay warm?

Here’s what’s been predicted for the 2025-26 winter forecast, according to AccuWeather, a data-driven weather service.

How cold will it be this winter?

The coldest parts of winter will begin in early December, before briefly easing up in January and returning with force in February, according to AccuWeather.

February is expected to bring frigid air that controls the temperature.

While it will still be a chilly winter, AccuWeather predicts that overall, the temperature will be 1-2 degrees warmer than historical averages.

How much snow will we get this winter?

AccuWeather predicts the heaviest amounts of snow to occur both at the beginning and at the end of winter.

Early in the season, winter storms are expected to start in Cananda and the Midwest before pushing toward the mid-Atlantic and Northeast. By late winter storms are expected to shift eastward, bringing snow from the Plains and Mississippi Valley over to the East Coast.

Snowfall is expected to be higher than last winter in parts of the Northeast, including Philadelphia and New York City. But total snowfall may still be lower overall in comparison to the historic average.

AccuWeather also predicts storms in mid-winter will be a strong mix of snow and rain.

Last year, Philadelphia received 8.1 inches of snow. This year AccuWeather expects 14-18 inches of snowfall.

The historic average snowfall for Philadelphia is 23.1 inches.
