Could Conor Geekie Be A Trade Option For The Habs?

With the Montreal Canadiens still looking to add centres to their organization, many names have been linked to the Canadiens as potential trade possibilities. On Sunday, Simon “the Snake” Boisvert said on his ” Mathias et Le Serpent” podcast with Mathias Brunet that he believes that a young player like Conor Geekie in Tampa Bay may be a good option for the Habs to trade for to get some much-needed centre depth at the NHL level.

Since getting traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning from the Utah Mammoth during the summer of 2024 in a package for defenseman Mikhail Sergachev, Geekie hasn’t exactly gotten a fair shot to play in the NHL, despite being a top prospect. According to Boisvert, Geekie isn’t getting much playing time because of the depth on the Lightning directly. He is stuck in a situation where there is no spot for him to show his offensive talent.

Last year, Geekie had 8 goals and 14 points in 52 games. This season, he started the year in the NHL, averaging between 8-10 minutes a game for the first 6 games of the season on a 4th line, where he could only put up one assist in that time. As a result, Geekie was recently sent back to the Syracuse Crunch. Oddly enough, his ice time he received was the game before he was sent down, when he got 13:49 in a 3-2 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets on October 18th.

In just 5 games with the Crunch, Geekie has put up 3 goals and 7 points, showing exactly why he is the top prospect in the Lightning organization. Geekie has shown glimpses of having great abilities to drive play and has a good shot in his arsenal.

He seems ready to play a good role in the NHL, and if the Lightning won’t play him, then someone should swoop in and trade for him to give him his opportunity. That’s where someone like the Habs comes in, as Geekie has proven that he can play centre in the NHL.

When Brunet asked Snake about what he thinks it would cost for the Habs to get their hands on a player of Geekie’s calibre, he mentioned that something like Owen Beck and a 2nd Round pick should be enough to get a deal done. Even though Geekie is a former 11th overall pick, he has been handled poorly since turning pro in the Lightning organization and has lost some of the value he had as a top prospect. Not to mention, with the ice time that the 21-year-old has been getting in Tampa Bay, he may also want a way out of the organization to be given a chance elsewhere.

Aside from being am offensive centre, the fact that he shoots left-handed and is 6’4 212 LBS also adds potential interest from the Habs. The Canadiens don’t have many left-handed centre depth throughout the organization, which would make sense to trade a right-handed centre like Beck for a guy like Geekie. Both players are 21 years old and in reality, a guy like Beck likely fits the role of a 4th liner as a defensive forward.

Meanwhile, Geekie would be able to play a more offensive role with the Habs, where he plays on a 3rd line alongside Kirby Dach and Zack Bolduc to give the team a more offensive line than when they play with Joe Veleno. Geekie could also get a little bit of power play time on the 2nd unit, being a net front presence with his size and skill.

It’s unclear if the Canadiens are interested in bringing Conor Geekie to the team, but it could be a good option if he’s unhappy in Tampa Bay and there are no 2nd line centres on the market for the time being.

Do you like the idea of the Habs getting a centre like Conor Geekie?
