What Happened to Eric Dane: How Did He Know He Had ALS?

Euphoria star Eric Dane‘s current appearance has saddened many fans after he was spotted in a wheelchair recently. Dane told PEOPLE in April that he had amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). He shared, “I have been diagnosed with ALS.” He further shared that he was “grateful” that he had his “loving family” by his side to “navigate this next chapter.”
Page Six released pictures of the actor when he was on a rare family outing with his former wife and model Rebecca Gayheart and 13-year-old daughter Georgia. They were spotted at Sushi Park in West Hollywood on Thursday.

He wore a casual black T-shirt and beige pants. While the condition had affected his physicality, he appeared to be in good spirits, according to the outlet. Georgia Geraldine is his youngest daughter, as the Marley & Me star also has an elder daughter, Billie Beatrice, 15, with Gayheart.
During a recent interview with The Washington Post, Dane revealed the reason why he had missed out on Grey’s Anatomy‘s epic reunion at the recent Emmys. He shared that he was hospitalized at the time. He shared, “So I was in the hospital during the Emmys getting stitches put in my head.”
He shared that he was “really upset” about missing the reunion, even calling ALS “a nasty disease”. However, he shared that “there was nothing I could do about it.” It is unclear whether this bad fall could’ve been the reason why he was seen in a wheelchair in the new photos.

When & How Did Eric Dane Find Out About His ALS Diagnosis?
During his appearance on Good Morning America, Eric Dane explained his experience with the first symptom of ALS. He told Diane Sawyer that the symptom first appeared a year and a half ago. He shared, “I started experiencing some weakness in my right hand, and I didn’t really think anything of it at the time.”
Dane further shared that he initially thought that it was because he “had been texting too much” or that his “hand was fatigued.” However, he noticed a few weeks later that the weakness had only “gotten a little worse.” He shared that since then, he had been to a couple of hand specialists and then to two neurologists.
After nine months of doctors’ appointments, he received his diagnosis. He shared that he had lost control of his right arm. He shared:
I have one functioning arm. My dominant side. My left side is functioning, my right side has completely stopped working. I feel like maybe a couple, few more months, and I won’t have my left hand either. It’s sobering.
He also recalled how he had gone on a boat trip with one of his teenage daughters. Despite being a former competitive swimmer and a water polo star, Dane realized that he couldn’t swim when he jumped into the ocean. He shared that he didn’t “generate enough power to get [himself] back to the boat,” adding that he had to accept he was “not safe in the water anymore.”
When his daughter pulled him back into the boat, he shared that he was “breaking down in tears.” He shared, “I was just heartbroken.” He shared that the illness made him very angry because of how it would take him away from his daughters while they are still young. He shared:
I’m angry because my father was taken from me when I was young, and now there’s a very good chance I’m going to be taken from my girls while they’re very young.
ALS is a rare degenerative disease that affects the muscles. It initially causes weakness in a limb, followed by slurred speech. It eventually causes the patients to lose their ability to speak, walk, eat, and breathe independently. Other notable stars diagnosed with the condition include Stephen Hawking, Eric Stevens, Aaron Lazar, John Driskell Hopkins, and Kenneth Mitchell.

Eric Dane isn’t ready to retire from acting after the diagnosis. He shared with PEOPLE, “I feel fortunate that I am able to continue working and am looking forward to returning to set of Euphoria next week.” According to PEOPLE, Dane returned to the set of Euphoria Season 3 on April 14, just four days after he revealed his diagnosis. He plays the Jacobs family patriarch, Cal Jacobs, in the show.
His first on-screen appearance since his ALS diagnosis was in Jensen Ackles‘ Prime Video series, Countdown. The show was unfortunately canceled after one season. The Supernatural actor spoke highly of his co-star when they appeared on the red carpet of the show’s premiere in June, calling him a “total stud” (via PEOPLE).
It was Dane’s first public appearance since he revealed his ALS diagnosis. The Boys actor shared that Dane had a great command of his scenes. He added that he had a leadership quality that he brought to the set, which was there even when the cameras weren’t rolling. He told PEOPLE:
He has such a command of scenes and the set just in his stillness and how just his quiet leadership, and it’s something that he brings from off set too. I mean, he does that when the cameras aren’t rolling. There’s just a quiet leadership to him that I truly learned from. So to get to mix it up with them on screen, I had to bring it.
During his interview with Good Morning America on June 16, he shared that he didn’t think “this is the end of my story.” He shared that he would continue to fight the disease, which was largely out of his control. He shared that he planned to “spend time with [his] family and work a little bit — if [he] can.”
Eric Dane and Rebecca Gayheart filed for divorce in 2018, citing irreconcilable differences. However, prior to announcing his ALS diagnosis to the world, they had called off their divorce in March. According to Page Six, Dane was seen on a date with Janelle Shirtcliff in June. Gayheart had previously called herself and Dane best friends and great co-parents.
