On November 11 we remember

Remembrance Day marks the end of the First World War in 1918 and is a time for reflection and gratitude. On this day, we honour all Canadians who served—and those who made the ultimate sacrifice—in the line of duty.. Their legacy lives on as we remember all that was given so we could live in freedom.

Those who have served were members of the Canadian Armed Forces, the RCMP, Indigenous veterans along with other ethnic minorities and cultural groups and contributed in both combat and support roles. To learn more about the diverse groups who have protected our country, visit the Government of Canada’s Remembrance Day website or peruse the resources available from the library.

The iconic poem “In Flanders Fields,” written by Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae, captures the profound sense of loss felt during the First World War. Today, it is recited as a tribute to all who have served our country in times of conflict and peace.

At the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, we observe two minutes of silence to honour the fallen and reflect on the ongoing service of those who continue to protect our nation. To find a Remembrance Day ceremony near you, visit the Legion website.
