Southampton Legend Set to Return to Club on Free Transfer

Southampton are set to sensationally re-sign Oriol Romeu on a free transfer, according to GIVEMESPORT senior reporter Fabrizio Romano.

Saints are currently looking for a new manager following the sacking of Will Still on Sunday evening, but the Championship strugglers are set to boost their squad with the addition of the former Barcelona midfielder.

Southampton Set to Re-Sign Oriol Romeu

According to Romano on X, Southampton are set to bring Romeu back to St Mary’s to bolster a squad which currently sits 21st in the Championship following relegation from the Premier League last season.

The 34-year-old has been a free agent since his contract with La Liga giants Barcelona was terminated in the summer, following a season-long loan spell with Girona last term.

Southampton have been left short in the central midfield area following a hamstring injury suffered by Shea Charles, while his midfield partner Flynn Downes has suffered from illness and injury in recent weeks.

For the defeat to Preston North End at the weekend, forgotten man Joe Aribo was drafted back into the squad alongside Kuryu Matsuki, whose squad time has been minimal since the opening weeks of the campaign.

Southampton were considered one of the favourites for promotion in the Championship this season, but it has been a horrendous start to the season – two wins in 13 matches culminated in Still being fired.

Sport Republic and owner Dragan Solak will hope that the appointment of a new manager – and the return of Romeu – will kickstart their season and lead them back up the table in the coming weeks and months.

According to GIVEMESPORT sources, senior Southampton players and staff are keen on the idea of Russell Martin returning to St Mary’s having led them to promotion two years ago.
