Southampton are in talks to sign former midfielder Oriol Romeu on a deal until the end of the season.
Romeu has been a free agent since leaving Barcelona in the summer and is due to travel to England to undergo a medical with the Championship club. The 34-year-old is set to sign an initial deal until the end of the season, although an option for an additional year is expected to be included in the contract.
His return to Southampton comes off the back of the club deciding to sack manager Will Still on Sunday following a run of poor results that has left them one place above the relegation zone.
The midfielder joined Southampton from Chelsea in 2015 and played more than 250 times for the club before leaving to join Girona on a three-year deal in September 2022.
After spending a season at Girona, where he made 36 appearances in all competitions, Romeo was signed by Barcelona — the team he made his professional debut for in May 2011.
He featured heavily for Xavi’s side in 2023-24, playing 37 times, but returned to Girona on loan for the 2024-25 campaign.
This summer he mutually agreed to terminate his three-year deal Barcelona 12 months early.
