Charlottesville Police Officers Render Lifesaving Aid Following Shooting on River Road

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – On November 1, 2025, at approximately 12:43 a.m., Charlottesville Police Department (CPD) officers responded to multiple 911 calls in reference to an active shooter at 1147 River Road. An officer who was in the immediate area heard the gunfire and arrived on scene within moments.

Upon arrival, officers located four individuals suffering from gunshot wounds. Responding officers immediately began administering lifesaving medical care, including the use of department-issued tourniquets and trauma kits, while simultaneously securing a large and active crime scene.

All four victims were transported to the University of Virginia Medical Center, where they are currently listed in stable condition.

Preliminary investigation indicates that a confrontation occurred during a private party at the location, resulting in shots being fired inside the building and at least two individuals being struck. The incident continued outside, where additional gunfire resulted in another victim being wounded.

The victims have been identified as a 44-year-old male, a 44-year-old female, and a 20-year-old male, all residents of Charlottesville.

Based on the ongoing investigation, Juan Gavin Castillo, 20, of Greene County, has been charged with the following offenses:

  • §18.2-51 — Malicious Wounding (2 counts)
  • §18.2-53.1 — Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony (2 counts)
  • §18.2-279 — Maliciously Discharge a Firearm Within a Building or Dwelling House (2 counts)

Castillo also sustained a gunshot wound during the incident and is listed in stable condition.

Chief Michael Kochis commended the swift and decisive actions of the responding officers:

“The quick response and lifesaving measures taken by our officers undoubtedly saved lives tonight. Their calm under pressure, use of tourniquets, and immediate medical intervention reflect the very best of who they are and the values of this department. I am incredibly proud of their actions and their commitment to protecting this community.”

All individuals charged with a crime are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
