Blue Jackets’ Mathieu Olivier ejected from game against Canucks

Columbus Blue Jackets winger Mathieu Olivier was given a five-minute major and a game misconduct during Saturday’s game against the Vancouver Canucks after delivering a hit from behind on defenseman Elias Pettersson.

The incident occurred in the second period after Pettersson shovelled a puck in the corner and Olivier finished his check, hitting the Canucks’ defender in the numbers with his face smashed into the glass.

Olivier finished the night with 7:36 of ice time and 15 minutes of penalties.

Vancouver won the game 4-3.

Sportsnet’s Joey Kenward pointed out on social media that it’s the second time Olivier has received a five-minute major and game misconduct since Oct. 24 when he delivered an illegal elbow on Washington Capitals’ defenseman Declan Chisholm.

Going into Saturday night, Olivier had one goal and four assists for five points and 17 penalty minutes in 13 regular-season games. In four seasons with the Blue Jackets, Olivier has recorded 29 goals and 35 assists for 64 points and 307 penalty minutes.

Through seven NHL seasons, Olivier, 28, has recorded 32 goals and 39 assists for 71 points in 263 career regular-season games with the Blue Jackets and Nashville Predators.

The Biloxi, Miss., native has also played in 156 career AHL games with the Milwaukee Admirals, where he scored 19 goals and 23 assists for 42 points and 262 penalty minutes.

Before turning professional, Olivier spent parts of five seasons playing in the QMJHL with the Moncton Wildcats, Shawinigan Cataractes and Sherbooke Phoenix. In 300 career regular-season games, where he scored 59 goals and 71 assists for 130 points and 390 penalty minutes.
