Kendra Scott Recounts Zac Brown’s African Proposal With Elephants, Hippos and Pink Diamond Ring
NEW YORK, NY — Jewelry designer Kendra Scott shared intimate details of country star Zac Brown’s proposal during an Oct. 28 appearance on TODAY with Jenna and Friends, offering viewers a close-up look at her custom pink diamond engagement ring and recounting the elaborate Africa proposal that took place in July.
“He did great — he did it all by himself,” Scott told hosts Jenna Bush Hager and guest co-host Leanne Morgan, according to multiple reports of the TODAY show segment. “He said, ‘Baby, it’s the rarest, just like you.’”
On the show, Scott, 51, described the proposal scene in Africa, where Brown arranged a barge with lanterns as the couple approached by boat. “We got off, and there were elephants on the banks and hippos in the water,” Scott said. “It was golden hour. I mean, we danced together on the boat and we listened to that song, ‘I may not be your first, but I’m your last.’ And at that moment, he kind of got down on one knee.”
The jewelry designer became emotional recounting the moment. “And I got on my knees with him, and we both were crying,” she said to Hager and Morgan, her voice cracking. “I don’t even know if we said yes, or what happened. I think I just said, ‘Yes, yes, yes,’ before he even got out ‘Will you marry me?’”
The ring features a 3.06-carat fancy pink diamond (GIA-certified VVS2) surrounded by 28 baguette-cut white diamonds totaling 3.17 carats, all set in platinum gold, according to the Houston Chronicle. Brown worked with Houston jeweler Franco Valobra to design the custom piece. When asked about price, according to CultureMap Houston, Valobra kept client confidentiality but said it was “very special”.
Brown, 47, and Scott first publicly revealed their relationship at the American Music Awards in May and announced their engagement to People magazine on July 24. Scott appeared on multiple talk shows in late October discussing the engagement, including TODAY with Jenna and Friends and the Tamron Hall Show.

Scott founded her namesake jewelry company in 2002 with $500, building it into a billion-dollar lifestyle brand with more than 115 stores. She currently serves as interim CEO, after former CEO Tom Nolan left the company in August. Forbes ranks her No. 41 among America’s richest self-made women with an estimated net worth of $900 million.
