FBI gives motive on Grand Blanc LDS church attack

GRAND BLANC, Mich. (WILX) – The FBI in Detroit released a one-month follow-up report on the investigation into the deadly attack of a Grand Blanc church.

On Sept. 28, 2025, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc Township was the site of a deadly shooting and fire.

On Friday, officials revealed a possible motive for the attack.

In the report, the FBI stated that the assailant, identified as 40-year-old Thomas Sanford of Burton, was motivated by anti-Mormon beliefs.

Sanford’s friends previously stated that he believed Mormons were the “Antichrist.”

In total, five people (including the gunman) were killed and nine were injured, the FBI says.
