NBA referee explains controversial missed call in Celtics loss to Jazz

BOSTON — Jaylen Brown looked like he was tripped by Keyonte George late in the Celtics’ loss to the Jazz. But there was no foul call, and after Brown lost the ball, the Jazz got a crucial basket on the other end to take the lead.

Here’s a look at the play where Brown was seemingly tripped by George, though no whistle went off. The Celtics went on to lose 105-103 to the Jazz on Monday at TD Garden. After the game, crew chief Kevin Scott explained the call in a pool report.

“During live play the crew observed George slip and fall just prior to Brown slipping on the same spot resulting in the ball becoming loose prior to any contact,” Scott said.

When asked why George was not called for a foul, Scott said, “Because the crew observed both players slip and fall prior to any contact. That’s why a foul was not called during live play.”

At that point in the game, the Celtics had possession and a one-point lead on the Jazz with less than a minute to go. After the Jazz got the fast-break opportunity, Lauri Markkanen converted to give Utah a one-point lead. A few possessions later, in a tie game, Jusuf Nurkic’s put-back layup with 0.6 seconds left on the clock was the deciding basket.

Brown was furious after the game, calling out the officials and saying they blew the call.

“The whole staff blows the (expletive) call, you know what I mean?” Brown said. “It cost us the game. Unacceptable. You can make mistakes at any point of the game, but right there, that wasn’t good. That wasn’t good. That was unacceptable. And then they’re telling me like, ‘Aw, we didn’t see it.’ How did none of you see it? You can’t trip somebody in the fourth quarter and then just be a no call. It’s some (expletive).”

It was a disappointing night for the Celtics as they struggled to shoot 3-pointers and were outrebounded significantly by Utah. C’s coach Joe Mazzulla said the Jazz outplayed them and were the harder playing team for most of the night. The Celtics were also outscored 38-26 in the third quarter.
