Liverpool vs Real Madrid preview
Former Liverpool favourite Xabi Alonso had a bruising return to Anfield in last season’s Champions League as his Bayer Leverkusen side were thrashed 4-0 by Arne Slot’s rampant Reds.
364 days later, Alonso is back on Merseyside as manager of Real Madrid, chasing a 14th victory in 15 games, and Trent Alexander-Arnold could also line up against his old club.
The right-back, unlike his coach, has had a tricky start to his career in Madrid. He suffered a hamstring injury five minutes into Real’s Champions League opener against Marseille and was an unused substitute in their last two league games.
Alexander-Arnold’s departure provoked a hostile response from some Liverpool supporters as they celebrated the Premier League title in Slot’s first season.
However, the Reds have more important things to worry about after a run of six defeats in eight games in all competitions.
Despite Liverpool’s home advantage, bookmakers are struggling to pick a favourite and the Reds need a morale boost before Sunday’s trip to rejuvenated Manchester City.
Real, beaten 2-0 at Anfield in last term’s league phase, have defensive injury problems but their attacking talents should rattle the Reds’ ropey rearguard.
Liverpool had conceded 14 goals in nine league games before Saturday’s 2-0 win over Aston Villa so Kylian Mbappe will be confident of adding to his tally of 18 goals in 14 starts for Real this term.
Jude Bellingham appeals at a bigger price in the anytime-scorer betting. He had a slow start to the campaign following shoulder surgery and was left out of Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for last month’s internationals.
Like his manager Alonso, Bellingham was heavily linked with Liverpool before moving to Real and he could have a big influence on the Anfield clash.
He scored the only goal of the game against Juventus as Real extended their perfect start in Europe, found the net with one of his five shots in the 2-1 win over Barca and struck again in last weekend’s rout of Valencia.
Shooting star Szoboszlai could test Real keeper
Dominik Szoboszlai contributed a goal and an assist in Liverpool’s rout of Eintracht Frankfurt and had three shots against Atletico Madrid despite starting in a deeper midfield role.
The Hungary star, who scored a brilliant free-kick against Arsenal at Anfield in August, also had three efforts – two of them on target – in the first half against Villa and should force Thibaut Courtois into at least one save.
Slow-starting Reds may need another comeback
Liverpool survived an early scare against Villa on Saturday, when Morgan Rogers curled a shot against the post, and they had conceded the first goal in their previous seven matches.
Real scored twice in the first half against Barcelona last month and were 3-0 up at half-time against Valencia on Saturday. Given Liverpool’s run of late goals earlier this season, the Real-draw double result is worth chancing at a big price.
