Liverpool injuries: Alexander Isak out of Real Madrid match, Curtis Jones training – The Athletic

Alexander Isak will miss Liverpool’s Champions League clash with Real Madrid at Anfield on Tuesday.

The club’s record signing has been sidelined for the past three matches due to a groin problem and the striker faces a race to be fit for Sunday’s Premier League trip to Manchester City. Goalkeeper Alisson and right-back Jeremie Frimpong have been ruled out until after the international break due to hamstring injuries.

“All three are not available for tomorrow,” head coach Arne Slot confirmed. “Jeremie and Alisson will both also not be available for Sunday. With Alex we have to wait and see.

“Definitely not starting on Sunday, but maybe he can be involved in the squad. He is still not training with the team.”

There was better news on midfielder Curtis Jones, who has returned to training ahead of the showdown with Xabi Alonso’s side. Slot must decide whether to keep faith with the same line up which helped lift the gloom with a 2-0 win over Aston Villa on Saturday.

Florian Wirtz is the most likely to earn a recall if the Dutchman does make changes. The Germany international has only started one of Liverpool’s past four Premier League matches, but has started all three Champions League matches so far this season with his brighter performances coming in Europe.

“I’ve said this quite a lot, not to be used as an excuse but to tell it how it is, many times we have had to play three games in seven days with little rest in between,” Slot said.

“For a player who comes from a different league, which is a very good league by the way, but people would agree the Premier League is a bit more intense in all the games.

“He has already played a lot in many games but he’s been unlucky with the end product either by himself or his team-mates. For me, he’s already brought exactly what was expected.

“He creates a lot for the team and will have his goals. I don’t think it comes as a surprise to anyone that if you’re 22 and come to a different league, you might need some time to adjust to that intensity if you play every three days. Ryan Gravenberch was sitting here and it took him a while to adjust to the intensity, maybe even longer than it will take for Florian.”
