A vibrant new book festival in South Devon is set to bring together authors, readers, performers and even table football enthusiasts — all under one roof.
The South Devon Book Festival will take place on Saturday, November 22, at Totnes Civic Hall from 10am to 5pm, offering a full day of free author interviews, workshops, choir performances, and more.
Founded by local author and former publishing professional Bob Fairbrother, the event has been designed to spotlight South West-based indie and self-published writers — with thirty-four table spaces available for authors to showcase and sell their work.
Speaking about the inspiration behind the event, Bob said: “I had missed out on a big festival and thought — why not set up my own? I’ve worked in sales and publishing and always loved bookshops, libraries and book people. The support I’ve had from writers and festival organisers has been incredible.”
The programme includes live interviews with authors hosted by Cathy Dodd, a local radio broadcaster with over 15 years’ experience. The guest list spans a variety of genres, from historical fiction to horror, including:
Rosemary Griggs, known for her Tudor-era novels and theatrical presentations. Madeline Dyer, whose YA anthology Being Ace was a 2024 Lambda finalist. Sam Davey, author of The Chosen Queen, a feminist retelling of Camelot. Debbie Young, best known for her bestselling Cotswold-set cosy mysteries. Mark Swan, award-winning book cover designer behind the studio Kid Ethic. Derek Air, who will be joined by South Devon Subbuteo Club for demo matches and many more, including Paul Roberts, Caroline Cusanelli, Laurence Shelley, and Alison Simpson.
Workshops and readings will also run throughout the day, with local writers and writing tutors sharing insights and advice.
A highlight of the lunchtime programme will be a performance by the Wild Goose Choir, while The Green Café of Totnes will serve refreshments including soups, curries, cakes and hot drinks.
Young writers from local schools will also have the chance to shine. A creative writing competition, supported by East Gate Bookshop, has been run in local primaries, with the winners invited to read their work during the event.
Admission to the hall and all events is free, although booking via Eventbrite is advised to guarantee entry. Full information and updates can be found at www.bobfairbrotherauthor.com/south-devon-book-festival or on social media.
