Tuesday’s EFL predictions

Coventry and Sheffield United have gone in opposite directions since missing out on promotion from last season’s Championship playoffs and the Sky Blues should be confident of strengthening their position at the summit.

Frank Lampard’s side have kicked on since losing out to Sunderland in the playoff semi-finals and, while they have to bounce back from a first defeat of the campaign away at Wrexham on Friday, the Blades look like the perfect opponents to provide a response.

Chris Wilder’s return to Sheffield United for his third spell as manager has not gone completely to plan and a 3-1 defeat at home to Derby on Saturday was the tenth time in 13 Championship outings in which they have been beaten.

That came on the back of a 3-2 loss at Preston, who had been trailing 2-0, and their defensive deficiencies could be exploited by Coventry’s prolific forwards.

The Sky Blues have scored 36 goals in 13 league outings, netting three or more in four of their last seven Championship clashes, and Sheffield United’s last three fixtures have gone over 3.5 goals.

Last season’s two Championship meetings featured four goals on each occasion and the prospects of a high-scoring encounter would certainly favour Coventry, who have scored 14 more goals than any other team in the division.

There are seven more Championship matches to look forward to on Tuesday evening and Millwall look way overpriced to avoid defeat at big-spenders Birmingham.

The Blues ran riot in a 4-0 rout of Portsmouth on Saturday but that was only their second victory in their last seven league outings and it has not been as simple adjusting to life back in the Championship as it may have been envisaged.

Millwall, meanwhile, have lost only three of their opening 13 matches and are shaping as genuine playoff contenders following four wins in their last five outings.

A 2-2 draw at Oxford ended the winning sequence on Saturday but five clean sheets this season shows their defensive steel and Birmingham won’t find it as easy to create chances like they did against an out-of-sorts Pompey.

There is one fixture taking place in League One and Rotherham can recover from Saturday’s FA Cup upset to Swindon by getting the better of Burton.

The Millers have been on a roll in the league, recording three straight wins over Northampton, Leyton Orient and Barnsley, and manager Matt Hamshaw made five changes for that cup exit which could be to blame.

This fixture may have been at the forefront of Hamshaw’s mind as a win could see his side move up to ninth and visitors Burton have won only four of their opening 13 matches, with a tally of 11 goals the third-joint worst attacking output in the league.
