Manchester City vs Borussia Dortmund preview
Borussia Dortmund’s first three Champions League matches produced a deluge of goals but they need to showcase their defensive qualities on Wednesday’s trip to Manchester City.
Dortmund conceded twice in injury-time to draw 4-4 at Juventus on matchday one before thumping Athletic Bilbao 4-1 and winning 4-2 in Copenhagen.
A reunion with their former striker Erling Haaland will be a massive test for BVB’s defence but their Bundesliga record suggests they should be competitive at the Etihad Stadium.
Since a 3-3 draw at St Pauli in their opener, Dortmund have conceded only three goals in eight league matches – in a 2-1 loss at leaders Bayern Munich and a 1-1 draw with second-placed RB Leipzig.
City have won three of the last four Champions League meetings with BVB by a 2-1 margin and that outcome is worth a bet in the correct-score market again.
Pep Guardiola’s men beat ten-man Napoli 2-0 on matchday one before a 2-2 draw in Monaco, where they conceded a late equaliser from the penalty spot, and a comfortable 2-0 win at Villarreal.
Last season’s shambolic league-phase campaign condemned City to a playoff-round defeat to Real Madrid but they look far less flaky this time around.
Guardiola must manage his resources smartly given that City host Premier League champions Liverpool on Sunday so impressive playmaker Rayan Cherki and fit-again midfielder Rodri may start on the bench.
Haaland scored his 12th and 13th goals of the league campaign in last weekend’s 3-1 win over Bournemouth and he has also struck four times in three Champions League matches.
Despite Haaland’s sizzling goalscoring form, City have not been hammering teams regularly. They won 4-0 at bottom club Wolves on the opening weekend and beat promoted Burnley 5-1 in late September but Dortmund, Champions League runners-up in 2023-24, should provide them with a good test.
Dortmund defence could keep Doku quiet
Jeremy Doku scored a lovely individual goal in City’s Champions League opener against Napoli but he is a big price not to have a shot on target against BVB.
The winger is yet to score in 549 minutes of Premier League action this term, having only five shots on target, and could be kept quiet by Dortmund’s three-man defence.
Bensebaini likely to add to card collection
Ramy Bensebaini, one of the visiting centre-backs, is worth a bet to receive the first booking, having picked up three yellow cards in eight Bundesliga starts this term.
The Algeria defender was also cautioned in three of his six appearances in World Cup qualifying and he was the only Dortmund player booked in their last Champions League game at Copenhagen.

Under 3.5 goals
Borussia Dortmund have won six of their last eight Bundesliga matches to nil and they are unlikely to crumble at the Etihad.
Nico Schlotterbeck to have over 0.5 shots
Bournemouth scored from a corner in Sunday’s 3-1 defeat at Manchester City and imposing BVB centre-back Schlotterbeck has had five attempts at goal in his last three league matches.
Under 3.5 cards
Dortmund will need to keep their discipline if they are to upset the Citizens and they have picked up only three yellow cards in their first three Champions League games.
