‘Immoral’: Trump threatens to defy courts

Welcome to our coverage of US politics.
Former Vice President Dick Cheney, who severed under George W Bush in the 2000s, has died aged 84. He was the controversial architect of the “war on terror” against Iraq.
It’s November 4, so one year since Donald Trump won the election against Kamala Harris.
Traditionally November 4 is also the annual day for all sorts of elections in the US and today is no exception.
New governors will be elected in both New Jersey and Virginia. The frontrunners in both states are Democrats. But Democrats in New Jersey are particularly spooked that with polls tightening Republican Jack Ciattarelli could snatch the state. In addition Californians will be asked whether to redraw the state’s electoral map which is an effort by Democrats to balance Republican majority states’ moves to redraw their maps.
In New York, barring a huge upset, Democrat Zohran Mamdani should win. But he is not your ordinary Democrat. Rather he is a “Democrat Socialist” with his main competition being former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo who is an establishment Democrat now running as an independent.
President Trump has threatened to withhold federal funding from New York City if Mr Mamdani wins.
Meanwhile Mr Trump appears to have threatened to withhold all food stamp payments to 40 million vulnerable Americans that his administration halted due to the shutdown.
That would see the government defying a federal court order demanding the SNAP payments be reinstated despite the shutdown.
