As Guy Fawkes Night approaches, Hamilton City Council is encouraging residents to enjoy the occasion safely and respectfully.
Guy Fawkes Night falls on Wednesday 5 November, with fireworks available for purchase from Sunday 2 November. While fireworks are a popular tradition for many families, they can also cause distress and pose risks if not used responsibly.
To minimise disruption, residents should avoid setting off fireworks before Guy Fawkes Night itself and celebrations should finish by 10.30pm to avoid disturbing neighbours, especially with work and school the following day.
To stay safe while celebrating:
- only purchase fireworks from licensed retailers
- follow all instructions carefully before use
- keep a bucket of water or hose nearby in case of fire
- always supervise children around fireworks
- avoid drinking alcohol around fireworks use
- if it’s a doesn’t go off, wait 15 minutes then soak it in water
- watch the weather – if it is windy, don’t light fireworks.
Being considerate with timing helps ensure everyone in the community can enjoy the occasion, and gives pet owners a chance to prepare and reduce the stress fireworks can cause animals.
Fireworks should only be used on private property and never in public parks or reserves unless prior permission has been granted.
Pet owners are encouraged to keep animals indoors during displays, close curtains, and play calming sounds to reduce stress. Ensuring pets are microchipped and wearing ID tags can help in case they become frightened and run away.
