Donald Trump has said that any Jew who votes for Zohran Mamdani is a “stupid person” in an incendiary post.
New Yorkers are currently heading to the polls to pick their new mayor, with Mr Mamdani, a pro-Palestinian Democratic Socialist, fighting it out against Andrew Cuomo, the state’s former governor, and Curtis Sliwa, the Republican candidate.
Mr Trump has repeatedly attacked the Democratic frontrunner, who has criticised Israel’s military actions in Gaza, branding him a “communist” and threatening to withhold funding if he wins the election as expected.
In his latest attack on Tuesday, the US president wrote on Truth Social: “Any Jewish person that votes for Zohran Mamdani, a proven and self-professed JEW HATER, is a stupid person!!!”
On Monday, the president gave his backing to Mr Cuomo, who is now running as an independent after being beaten by Mr Mamdani in the Democratic primary.
Across the country, a number of elections are taking place in races that could play a crucial role in determining the approaches of Democrats and Republicans ahead of the 2026 midterms, including gubernatorial races in New Jersey and Virginia.
On Tuesday morning, bomb threats in the New Jersey forced authorities to temporarily close some polling stations. The threats were later determined to be unfounded.
In California, Gavin Newsom’s controversial plans to redraw congressional districts, in a move that would provide a boost for the Democrats, will be put to a public vote known as “Proposition 50”.
Mr Trump, who sparked the redistricting row by urging Republicans to secure additional seats using the tactic, has claimed mail-in ballots are enabling voter fraud in the race, labelling it a “giant scam” and threatening legal action.
