No matter who wins mayoral race, Detroit voters will make history
On Election Day 2025, Detroit voters will either elect the city’s first female mayor or an underdog who has been trailing badly in the polls.
Polls across Michigan close at 8 p.m. local time on Election Day. After that, results are expected to trickle in throughout the night for local races throughout the state.
Several key races will be decided, including Detroit mayor, Detroit City Council seats, several mayoral races throughout metro Detroit and key ballot proposals in certain communities.
Here’s how you can find election results in metro Detroit and beyond.
Here are the biggest races to watch in metro Detroit:
- Detroit mayor: The Rev. Solomon Kinloch is looking to upset current frontrunner — in polling and campaign cash — Detroit City Council President Mary Sheffield. Each is seeking to replace outgoing Mayor Mike Duggan, who is opting to run for governor in 2026.
- Detroit City Council races: Along with a heated mayor’s race, there are two open districts seats and two at-large seats up for grabs on the Detroit City Council. In District 5, Renata Miller, an Indian Village resident, faces Willie Burton, a commissioner on the city’s police oversight board. And, in District 7, Denzel Anton Hines-McCampbell and state Rep. Karen Whitsett are competing to replace current councilmember Fred Durhal III, who opted to pursue a bid for mayor rather than a second term on the council, but lost in the August primary. Citywide, Detroit’s two at-large council members, Incumbents Coleman Young II and and Mary Waters, are running for reelection in a field that includes former City Council member Janee’ Ayers and James Harris, a community relations chief for the Detroit Fire Department.
- Metro Detroit mayoral races to watch: Hamtramck, Dearborn, Pontiac, Southfield and Roseville are among the communities voting in mayoral races. Sterling Heights and Roseville are also voting on key City Council seats.
