Victories over Benfica and Ajax have put Chelsea in a strong position to claim a coveted top-eight spot and Enzo Maresca’s Blues should be confident about boosting their prospects by beating Qarabag in Azerbaijan.

Their Baku-based opponents are perhaps not the whipping boys they once were in Europe, as Benfica and Copenhagen have already found to their cost, but they were brought down to earth by defeat to Athletic Bilbao in their last European outing and look set for another tough evening.

Qarabag vs Chelsea preview

Chelsea have got their Champions League quest firmly back on track following an opening defeat to Bayern Munich and another stride towards the knockout stage should be taken in Azerbaijan on Wednesday.

Results such as their 3-1 defeat at the Allianz Arena should not regarded as disastrous in the revamped league format, but bypassing the playoff round to the last 16 depends on winning games you are expected to.

The Blues have been consistent in that regard. Their 1-0 win at Stamford Bridge over Benfica was a scrappy affair, but Enzo Maresca’s side were inspired in a 5-1 rout of Ajax that has given them a strong foundation from which to push on.

The Benfica win started a run that has seen them win six of their last seven outings – the only blip was the concession of a last-gasp winner for Sunderland at the Bridge – and the Club World Cup winner are growing into the season despite the continued absence of their most creative player, Cole Palmer.

They have continued to create chances in the England star’s absence – their expected-goals (xG) figure in Saturday’s 1-0 win at Tottenham was 3.7 – and that points to goals when they embark on the long trip to Baku.

Hosts Qarabag will be pretty content with how things have been going in the Champions League. The Azerbaijani champions stunned Benfica and Copenhagen in their first two league-phase matches, indicating they are perhaps not quite the also-rans they have been at this level previously.

However, despite taking an first-minute lead at Athletic Bilbao, Qarabag fell to a 3-1 defeat on matchday three and it could be a similar story against Chelsea.

Qarabag lost 3-2 to Robbie Keane’s Ferencvaros in the home leg of their playoff tie, so their defence could be severely tested, and while Chelsea squandered plenty of chances on their visit to Spurs, they should have packed their shooting boots for this one.

Pedro can be figurehead for Blues attack

Joao Pedro was forced to sit out Chelsea’s 5-1 win over Ajax after he was sent off in the 1-0 success at home to Benfica, but the Brazilian’s confidence should have been lifted by scoring the winning goal at Tottenham on Saturday.

He had five efforts on goal against Spurs, all of which were on target and, should Maresca put his faith in him again, he can test the Qarabag goalkeeper more than once.

Caicedo has not been shy

A player who could potential land an anytime-goalscorer bet at a hefty price is Chelsea midfielder Moises Caicedo.

While the Ecuadorian is hailed for his defensive quality in the middle of the pitch, he can also make his presence felt in the final third.

Caicedo has scored four times this season, including in his last Champions League appearance against Ajax, and looks to have been too easily dismissed.

Joao Pedro to score at any time

The Brazilian striker scored his first goal since the end of August at Tottenham on Saturday and should lead the Chelsea charge in Azerbaijan.

Over six Chelsea corners

Only Arsenal and Tottenham have taken more Premier League corners than the Blues and they forced 11 in their last European game against Ajax.

Under 2.5 Qarabag cards

Qarabag picked up three yellow cards against Copenhagen but none in their games against Benfica and Athletic Bilbao.
