Jacob Murphy’s ‘brilliant’ message sums up exactly why Newcastle United fans must not panic

Jacob Murphy has delivered a vital message to Newcastle United supporters following Sunday’s crushing defeat to West Ham.

The Magpies were woeful at the London Stadium, despite going into the game as massive favourites. They let themselves down, with Newcastle United losing 3-1 to West Ham after taking the lead.

Jacob Murphy’s goal looked like it would set Newcastle on their way towards a comfortable victory, only for the Hammers to flip the script. Nuno Espirito Santo’s side rallied back, ensuring that the Magpies’ wait for an away win in the Premier League carried on.

It was an unacceptable performance from Newcastle, who continue to fall short of expectations when they are not playing at St James’ Park.

Jacob Murphy knows Newcastle United will fix their away form

It is a problem that Eddie Howe must address, and Jacob Murphy’s post-match message has summed up exactly why Toon fans should have complete faith in the Newcastle United manager and this squad.

Speaking to Newcastle’s official website, Murphy reminded supporters that this team always ‘find a way’ amid moments of adversity.

“We can’t be too reactionary in moments like this,” he said.

“We know what we do so well at home, so it’s transferring that into away performances and making our away games really feel like home games. Obviously that is difficult to do, but we have to find a way.

“What is brilliant about this team is we always find a way.”

Newcastle United’s best season ever started badly

The 2024/25 season saw Newcastle United end their trophy drought by winning the Carabao Cup. They then used that as a springboard to qualify for the Champions League.

It was the Magpies’ best season ever, but it certainly was not perfect from start to finish.

They began the campaign by playing poorly but picking up results, then the results started to match the performances. Eddie Howe’s side were delivering in big games against the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal, before fumbling on the road against teams they should be beating.

Newcastle were heavily criticised for their inconsistency, while there was pressure on Eddie Howe amid the backdrop of a chaotic summer that saw Paul Mitchell arrive and fail to deliver any senior signings.

But Howe and Newcastle United found a way. They found consistency. They found a way to win silverware and qualify for Europe’s biggest competition.

As Murphy says, this Newcastle United squad are capable of turning things around. Sunday’s performance against West Ham was not acceptable, but history dictates that Howe will find a solution.

He has to, otherwise the 2025/26 campaign will be remembered for all the wrong reasons.
