Meghan Markle is reportedly making a shock return to acting eight years after quitting Hollywood to join the royal family.
According to The Sun, the Duchess of Sussex will join big names such as Lily Collins, Brie Larson, Henry Golding and Jack Quaid – Meg Ryan and Dennis Quaid’s son – in the upcoming film, Close Personal Friends.
The masthead reports that Meghan was spotted on the set of the rom-com today in Pasadena, LA. While little is known about the film, except that it follows two couples, one famous and the other not, it’s understood Meghan will be playing herself in the Amazon MGM Studios production.
“This is a massive moment for Meghan and signifies a return to doing what she truly loves,” a source to the outlet. “She has been swamped with offers but this one felt right.”
“It is Meghan’s way of gently putting her toe back in the water and seeing how she enjoys being back on set.”
And it’s believed everyone is excited for the actress’ big-screen return – even her husband, Prince Harry.
“Everyone involved is super-excited, and have been sworn to secrecy about her involvement,” the source added.
“Prince Harry is, of course, really supportive and quite simply wants Meghan to do whatever brings her joy.”
It was back in 2017 that Meghan revealed she was quitting in the wake of her engagement to Harry and their subsequent marriage the following year.
A lot has happened ever since with the couple welcoming two children, stepping down as a working royals and moving back to America. And in recent years, Meghan has become an entrepreneur and TV host of the Netflix series, With Love, Meghan.
But it seems she has always looked back on her acting career fondly. During her time in Hollywood, Meghan appeared in movies such as Horrible Bosses and Remember Me, and got her big break in the TV legal series Suits, on which she appeared from 2011 to 2017.
In a recent Aspire with Emma Grede podcast, Meghan did admit to missing being on set.
“Sometimes,” she said when asked if she missed acting. “But you know what, actually, having a large team, being back on set with With Love, Meghan was great, because I realised how much I missed my crew. I love being around a crew.”
In the podcast, she explained she was not able to properly farewell the crew on Suits, because her departure from the show was so hush-hush as her relationship with Harry was not public knowledge when they filmed the final season.
“It was such a unique time, because we couldn’t say that I was leaving, necessarily,” she said on the podcast. “It was speculated. So, after seven years on the series, we couldn’t have a going away party. I couldn’t say my goodbyes … If my crew’s watching, I miss you guys. I wish I could have said bye.”
Meghan said that filming her Netflix series certainly reignited her passion for being among creatives.
“I think for me, having the series, even though it wasn’t scripted, was really great to get that piece back,” she explained.
“But then also building my own business, you have a team, and that’s really what I was craving.”
