Rep. Mace announces plans to sue Charleston Airport, others for defamation

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – A United States congresswoman representing the Lowcountry says she is filing a defamation lawsuit over “misleading” incident reports.
Republican Representative Nancy Mace (SC-01), who is also running to be South Carolina’s next governor, has retained legal counsel ahead of planned litigation against both American Airlines and the Charleston International Airport. She alleges that airport and airline employees “coordinated and conspired to create false and misleading incident reports” regarding events that took place at that airport early Thursday.
Mace was accused in those incident reports of berating airport police and staff, allegedly being “very irate” and using derogatory and profane language toward the staff.
Shortly after, Mace said the “politically motivated” incident was just one of many security breaches, “a pattern of neglect and hostility” unique to the Charleston International Airport.
Silent footage released by the Charleston International Airport shows the moments of an incident involving US Rep. Nancy Mace and police at Charleston International Airport.
Now, Mace says these “fabricated reports” are defamatory, violate her civil rights and constitute tortious interference in her gubernatorial campaign. She will be represented by Larry Klayman, the founder of Judicial Watch and Freedom Watch.
“We believe Congresswoman Nancy Mace has been subjected to a calculated and coordinated effort to malign her character through deliberately falsified documentation,” Klayman said. “No American, let alone a sitting member of Congress, should be subjected to institutional misconduct and defamation of this nature. We intend to hold both American Airlines and Charleston International Airport fully accountable for their actions.”
Mace plans to seek damages for defamation and reputational harm as well as public corrections of the reports, retractions of the reports or both.
The lawsuit has not yet been filed; additional details regarding these legal actions are expected as Mace proceeds.
