Lobo men’s basketball team hosts home opener

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The New Mexico men’s basketball team will tip off the 2025-26 season at The Pit Wednesday night hosting East Texas A&M.

Fans who arrived early were able to get their photo taken with the 2024-25 Mountain West Regular Season Trophy on the north concourse.

The Lobos advanced to the Round of 32 in the 2025 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament last spring, but that team will not be returning.

The Lobos are one of three teams in the entire nation to not return a single player, coach, or basketball staff member from last year. They were picked to finish fifth in the preseason Mountain West poll.

This will be the inaugural season for head basketball coach Eric Olen, who is coming off 20 years of building up the UC San Diego program.

New Mexico is 92-30 in season openers and has won 22 straight openers since a loss to Cal in the first game of the 2002-03 season. The Lobos are 53-5 in home openers at The Pit, with their last loss being that same game to Cal.

The Lobos’ three-game season-opening homestand will continue on Saturday when they host UT Arlington. That game will be held at 2 p.m.
