Albertan who won $36M lottery jackpot born and raised in Calgary

Alberta’s newest multi-millionaire was revealed Tuesday at a ceremony in Calgary.

The Western Canada Lottery Corporation (WCLC) says the $36 million LOTTO 6/49 Gold Ball jackpot from Oct. 15 was claimed by Stacey Boyce of Whitecourt.

Boyce was born and raised in Calgary and now runs a logging company near Hinton. He wanted to come back to the city for his announcement and celebration.

Boyce says he regularly makes trips to the store in Hinton to keep his camp stocked and warm.

“I’m there almost every day to get propane,” Boyce said. “I usually buy my lottery tickets once a week [while I’m there].”

On one trip into town, he checked a ticket he’d bought for the LOTTO 6/49 draw.

“I went into 7-Eleven to buy some new propane tanks and scanned it,” he said. “I’d heard [the LOTTO 6/49 winner] was someone in Alberta.”

Boyce says his jaw was on the floor when he saw the amount.

“I actually walked out of the store and had to come back because I’d forgotten my propane bottles!” he recalled.

The born-and-raised Calgarian said the whole process has been a bit of a blur. But, there’s one part he remembers loud and clear: when he told his daughter about the win, she immediately asked for a pony.

“I want to make sure my daughter has a comfortable life,” he said. “We’ll see about the pony,” he added, laughing.
