Paris Saint-Germain 1-2 Bayern Munich: Initial Observations and Reactions

  • For the first 30 minutes of the second half, PSG’s lack of a big body at the number nine position completely neutered their second half offense. Forcing the ball to the wings but refusing to get to the endline. Settling for low percentage shots from 20-30 yards away. Very little movement off the ball. Dominating possession with a player advantage is worthless without a motivated effort.
  • Once João Neves scored, PSG found some energy at the same moment that Bayern started to wear down.
  • Vincent Kompany waited way too long to use his second half substitutions. The cracks started to show around the 65th minute and the mistake on the goal was more mental than physical.
  • Vincent Kompany sprinting onto the field at the final whistle is awesome. Love this guy as Bayern’s leader.
  • Until somebody proves otherwise, Bayern is still perfect. 16 wins in a row is outrageously good. Beating PSG in their home stadium while playing half the match down a man is insane. Can’t wait to go put Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on November 26th.

Bayern will head back to Germany for a clash on the road against 10th-place Union Berlin before a two-week international window.

88’: Substitution. Leon Goretzka replaces Harry Kane.

84’: Yellow card. Josip Stanišić is booked for arguing. Nuno Mendes is booked for a debatable foul on Joshua Kimmich.

81’: Substitution. Kim Min-jae replaces Michael Olise.

74’: Goal, PSG. Bayern up 2-1. Konrad Laimer gets caught napping on the back post as João Neves volleys in PSG’s first goal.

66’: Substitutions. Gonçalo Ramos and João Neves replace Bradley Barcola and Fabián Ruiz.

49’: Yellow card. Manuel Neuer is booked for time wasting.

47’: Yellow card. Tom Bischof is immediately booked for a foul.

46’: Substitution. Tom Bischof replaces Serge Gnabry. Looks like Bischof will play on the left wing in a 4-2-3 setup.

  • Both teams have showcased a world class high press. PSG has looked more organized defensively but Bayern has been more effective in forcing mistakes. As predicted, Bayern has earned the halftime lead.
  • When was the last time Bayern only had 43% possession in a half? Bayern’s offense has spent a lot of time running straight at PSG’s backline with quick passing and movement. Bayern might have to play this way for 90 minutes to avoid a comeback.
  • Headband Serge Gnabry is playing out of his mind. Every clever pass or flick finds the mark.
  • You’re all BANNED from complaining about Luis Díaz’s finishing until we come back from the international break. Both goals were absolutely clinical. The Colombian has been ferocious, often drawing two to four defenders when he touches the ball.
  • About that red card…It is probably the correct decision but both players put themselves in an unnatural position. What do y’all think?

HT: Bayern up 2-0 at the break but will be down to 10 men for the entire second half.

45’+7: Substitution. Senny Mayulu replaces Achraf Hakimi.

45’+7: Red card! Luis Díaz is sent off for a reckless challenge on Achraf Hakimi.

45’: Josip Stanišić scores but is clearly offside.

32’: GOOOAAALLL! Bayern up 2-0. Luis Díaz picks Marquinhos’ pocket and buries his shot.

31’: Serge Gnabry’s shot from outside the box hits BOTH posts. What a lucky moment for Lucas Chevalier.

30’: Big save from Manuel Neuer! Bradley Barcola snuck behind Konrad Laimer but Neuer comes up big.

25’: Substitution. After nearly equalizing, Ousmane Dembélé is replaced by Kang-In Lee.

22’: Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s volleyed cross is scored by Ousmane Dembélé. Luckily, VAR ruled Dembélé offside.

4’: GOOOAAALLL! Bayern up 1-0. Michael Olise slips behind PSG’s defense and Luis Díaz buries the rebound.

1’: LET’S GOOOOOOOOOO!!!

On Tuesday night, Bayern Munich will face the greatest threat to their unprecedented 15-game winning streak on the road against the defending Champions League winners, Paris Saint-Germain. Both teams are sitting atop the table in their domestic leagues and will use this to establish their place in the Champions League race.

The last time Bayern tasted defeat was at the hands of PSG in the 2025 Club World Cup. Consequently, PSG was also the last opponent to hold a clean sheet against Bayern. In the Champions League, Bayern has won the last four encounters by an aggregate score of 5-0. The most memorable match between the two clubs was the 2020 Champions League final in Lisbon, where Kingsley Coman scored a title-winning header against his former club.

PSG has also started the season in impressive fashion. The French club has only lost to Marseille on a night where half the team was collecting awards at the Ballon d’Or ceremonies. With three wins and a +10 goal differential, PSG is tied with Bayern for first place in the Champions League group stage table. Technically, PSG owns the tiebreaker with one more goal scored.

Odds: Bayern (+170), Draw (+290), PSG (+135)

Prediction: Bayern wins 3-1. This is the boldest prediction of the season. Bayern will be the underdog for the first time and will respond with a deafening win at the Parc des Princes. Bayern will suffocate PSG and create two goals directly off turnovers in the first half. Luis Díaz will have an elite finish and Harry Kane will score from the penalty spot. PSG will claw back a goal after halftime to create a tense atmosphere before Díaz scores a 1v1 to put the game away.

Talent will be featured at all positions and intensity will be off the charts, so let’s get down to brass tacks and discuss it! This is what we have on tap for this edition of the Bavarian Podcast Works — Preview Show:

  • What to watch for with Paris Saint-Germain.
