Rob Gronkowski might not be ready to play, but he’s always ready to joke.
The former New England Patriots tight end had a quick-witted response in a back-and-forth with Patriots owner Robert Kraft on Nov. 12.
Kraft asked Gronkowski, who was signing a one-day contract to retire as a Patriot on Nov. 12, if he might be willing to sign a two-day contract with the team instead. New England is scheduled to host the New York Jets on “Thursday Night Football” on Nov. 13, and Kraft joked that Gronkowski could play in the game if he stuck around one more day.
“Let’s do it!” Gronkowski said, then followed up with: “What’s the signing bonus?”
Kraft grinned at the response and said, “Nothing’s changed.”
Rob Gronkowski career history
Gronkowski played for the Patriots for nine seasons between 2010 and 2018. His last game with New England was in their Super Bowl 53 win over the Los Angeles Rams, and he announced his (first) retirement just over one month later, in March 2019.
The star tight end finished his Patriots stint with franchise records in career touchdown receptions (79), games with multiple touchdowns (16), and 100+ yard games by a tight end (26).
After former Patriots quarterback Tom Brady signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers ahead of the 2020 season, Gronkowski returned to football. The Buccaneers traded for the tight end’s rights in April 2020 and reunited him with Brady in Tampa Bay.
Gronkowski played two seasons in Tampa Bay, winning another Super Bowl, and retired (again) after the 2021 season. His final game was once again a postseason meeting with the Rams, this time a divisional round loss.
The former NFL tight end and four-time All-Pro announced he’d sign his one-day contract to retire with the Patriots on Nov. 9. The team held a press conference to commemorate it on Nov. 12.
