Nationwide warns customers to ‘cash cheques’ before January 1
Nationwide has urged customers to cash in cheques before New Year’s Day. The UK’s largest building society says January 1, 2026, could be a key date in the cut-off to claim a £50 bonus payment.
Nationwide, which has branches in Birmingham, has issued a one-off payment for £50 to over 12 million customers last year, as part of its Big Nationwide Thank You payment.
Nationwide, which is rivalled by Santander, NatWest, TSB, Barclays, Lloyds Bank, HSBC UK and more, will be paying the £50 sums as a ‘thank you’ – after it successfully took on Virgin Money.

All payments have been issued to those who are eligible, either being paid directly into a bank account or in the form of a cheque in the post.
If you were sent a cheque, you need to cash this in by January 1, 2026, to receive your payment.
A spokesperson said: “All ‘The Big Thank You’ payments have been made to eligible customers, and all cheques have been sent. Customers must pay in cheques by 1 January 2026 to make sure they don’t miss out on the payment.
“Any enquiries from customers who have been unable to deposit their cheque by 1 January 2026 will be considered on a case-by-case basis.”
Those benefiting from the payout include Imaan and Theo, who have two young children – Nyla, four, and Kylian, three – and live in Essex.
Imaan and Theo, who is a teacher, are each in line for the £50 payment, and several members of their wider family are poised to benefit, too.
“Both of our mothers bank with Nationwide,” says Imaan, an educational psychologist. “Two of my brothers will be getting the £50 too.”
She adds: “It was lovely – you don’t expect to be given free money, so it was nice to wake up to that information today.”
