Memphis enters the new year with unfinished business after an up-and-down 2024-25 campaign. The Grizzlies clawed their way to an eighth-place finish in the Western Conference and made it out of the play-in tournament, but their postseason stay was short-lived.
A first-round matchup with the powerhouse Oklahoma City Thunder ended in a quick four-game sweep. Their preseason didn’t exactly inspire confidence, either, they dropped four of their five games, though they capped it off with an encouraging 141–125 victory over the Miami Heat, showing flashes of the up-tempo, high-octane offense they hope to sustain this year.
On the other side, the New Orleans Pelicans are trying to bounce back from what was, frankly, a nightmare season. The 2024-25 campaign saw them finish near the bottom of the league with a dismal 21–61 record, capped by six consecutive losses, the last of which came against the eventual champions, the Thunder. Injuries decimated the roster, leaving the team in constant turmoil. Their preseason tour was a mixed bag: two wins in Australia provided some early momentum, but back-to-back defeats against the Rockets and Magic in the States reminded everyone just how far this team still has to go.

At the heart of everything, of course, is Ja Morant. When he’s on the floor, the Grizzlies look like a legitimate playoff threat. When he’s not, whether due to injuries or off-court distractions, the team’s ceiling drops dramatically. Keeping Morant healthy and focused is priority number one for new head coach Tuomas Iisalo, who earned his promotion thanks to his innovative offensive schemes.
His system is built on pace, spacing, and a relentless emphasis on transition play and three-point shooting, a style often described as “controlled chaos.” The biggest roster shakeup of the summer was Desmond Bane’s departure to Orlando, a tough loss considering his scoring ability. To offset that, Memphis brought in Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Cole Anthony while adding five promising rookies through the draft.

Last year’s troubles began early when Dejounte Murray, brought in to be Zion Williamson’s backcourt co-star, went down with a major injury just weeks into the season. Adding to their challenges, veteran guard C.J. McCollum left in the offseason to join the Washington Wizards. To replenish the roster, New Orleans added Saddiq Bey and Jordan Poole, two players who bring scoring punch but also questions about consistency.
And then there’s Zion, still the focal point of both the franchise and the conversation around it. The former No. 1 pick has once again made headlines for his offseason transformation, claiming to be in the best shape of his career after dropping significant weight. He’s vowed to stay healthy and finally live up to his superstar potential. For a Pelicans team that’s spent too many seasons stuck in “what if” mode, his ability to stay on the floor could be the difference between another lost year and a genuine resurgence.
