‘One of best films ever made’ fans say is a ‘masterpiece’ on TV tonight

This legendary film created a sensation in cinema when it first arrived in the 1990s and remains “one of the best films ever made”, according to film enthusiasts.

Directed, produced and featuring Mel Gibson, Braveheart stands as the ultimate war drama chronicling the First War of Scottish Independence against King Edward I of England. The narrative follows the 13th-century Scottish fighter who courageously spearheads an uprising against King Edward I of England to liberate his nation.

Following personal tragedy and fuelled by a passion for liberty, he successfully rallies a remarkable number of Scots. All yearning to battle for freedom from English rule, they combine their strength to reclaim their territory in what represents a dramatised account of historical events, paying tribute to the warrior.

An enthusiastic review on Rotten Tomatoes says: “Beautiful cinematography, compelling characters, and intense, gory, and violent battle scenes, Braveheart is a thrilling and heartfelt experience after 30 years and has a great performance and direction from Mel Gibson.”

Meanwhile, another admirer described it plainly as “a complete cinematic masterpiece”. Additional viewers have dubbed Braveheart the “best movie of all time”.

Upon its theatrical release, the film received immediate acclaim and became both a critical darling and commercial triumph. It earned a remarkable $209.0 million globally against a considerably smaller production budget of $53–$72 million, and remained in the US box office Top 10 for nine weeks.

Another viewer commented on the picture, saying: “History buffs don’t like the liberties taken, but this is truly a big tentpole movie not really made anymore, with the possible exception of Nolan. No dodgy CGI here. Battles, speeches and war paint galore.

“Gibson is superb and the supporting cast one of the best you’ll see. Gibson took the violence level up a notch and cinema was never the same again.”

However, it’s Mel Gibson’s contribution both in front of and behind the camera that truly distinguishes the production, which was subsequently acknowledged when he secured the Oscar for Best Director. Audiences consistently highlight the brilliance he delivered to the picture, with one declaring it’s “the best Mel Gibson movie yet”.

One fan said: “Love braveheart the love story is so beautiful and feels so real and pure. This is my favourite movie of all time and Mel Gibson is prefect for this role. Bits of it are so heartbreaking and the costume and design make it feel so real. The cast are fantastic. It is a movie I never get bored of deserved all the oscars for this.”

For those keen to immerse themselves in 13th century Scotland, Braveheart is scheduled for broadcast on Film4 tonight, Thursday November 6, at 9pm. If you’re otherwise engaged tonight, the film can also be streamed on Disney+.
