Wind and rain warnings issued for B.C.’s South Coast

Overlapping warnings are in effect Thursday morning as strong weather sweeps across B.C.’s South Coast and Lower Mainland.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has issued a rainfall warning for parts of Metro Vancouver, including the North Shore, Coquitlam and Maple Ridge. Howe Sound is also under the rainfall warning.

1130 NewsRadio Meteorologist Michael Kuss says the rain will likely be heaviest during the afternoon commute Thursday.

“An additional 20 to 40 mm of rainfall can be expected before the rain eases off later this evening,” said the ECCC.

“Water will likely pool on roads and in low-lying areas. There may be a significant impact on rush hour traffic. Local utility outages are possible.”

Meanwhile, the agency has also issued a wind warning for Richmond, Delta, the Sunshine Coast and much of eastern Vancouver Island.

It says winds may reach speeds of 70 to 90 kilometres per hour.

The ECCC says winds will also ease in the evening, but it’s warning residents to “secure loose objects.”

BC Ferries has cancelled certain sailings from Vancouver’s Tsawwassen Terminal to Victoria’s Swartz Bay as a result of “severe weather forecast for high winds in the Strait of Georgia.”

All cancellations and service notices can be found on the BC Ferries website.
