‘Expand the depth’: Socceroos introduce 11 new faces for South American match ups

Socceroos head coach Tony Popovic has selected his squad for the upcoming matches against Venezuela and Colombia.
Eleven new faces join the 26-player squad, including seven potential debutants and five home-based players.
Both matches will be played in the United States, in Texas and New York respectively.

Melbourne City goalkeeper Patrick Beach and teammate Kai Trewin have been given their first Socceroos call-ups, while Sydney FC duo Paul Okon-Engstler and Al Hassan Toure were also called up from the A-League.
James Overy (Manchester United) and Deni Juric (Wisla Plock) also received their first call up to the Socceroos squad.
Star midfielder Jackson Irvine is included in the 26-player squad, after nearly nine months out with a stress fracture injury in his left foot.

“It’s another opportunity to expand the depth and introduce players who have not yet been exposed to the Socceroos environment or senior international football,” Popovic explained.
“We also welcome back some familiar faces, from Australia and abroad.
“I’ve had the chance to closely observe the opening rounds of the A-League season, and we believe this is the ideal time to integrate domestic players into the squad.
“We are delighted to be back in the United States to face strong South American opposition as we continue our preparations for the World Cup.”
The Australia side lost to the United States in their last international friendly, breaking their 11-game undefeated streak under Popovic.
Alessandro Circati, Jordy Bos, Jacob Italiano, Daniel Arzani, Mitch Duke, Joe Gauci, Ajdin Hrustic, Hayden Matthews, Alex Robertson and Patrick Yazbek have all been left out of the squad for the November matches.
The FIFA World Cup draw is scheduled to take place on December 5.
