Actress responds to backlash over Charlie Kirk comments: ‘Nearly broke me’

Kristin Chenoweth has said that the backlash to her comments about Charlie Kirk’s death “nearly broke” her.
The Tony-winning actress addressed the mixed reactions she received for mourning Kirk’s death in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
“It nearly broke me, and that’s all I’m going to say,” Chenoweth told the outlet. “You probably know my heart, so you probably know.”
Following Kirk’s assassination on Sept. 10, Chenoweth wrote on Instagram that she was “upset” about the conservative activist’s killing.
“Didn’t always agree but appreciated some perspectives,” she said at the time, per THR. “What a heartbreak. His young family. I know where he is now. Heaven. But still.”
The “Wicked” star’s words infuriated some members of the LGBTQ+ community, which make up a large portion of Chenoweth’s fanbase.
The Emmy winner later addressed the backlash on NY1 in September, saying, “I saw what happened [to Kirk] online with my own eyes, and I had a human moment of reflection.”
She added, “It’s no secret that I’m an advocate for the LGBTQ+ community.”
Kirk, 31, was the CEO and co-founder of the conservative youth organization Turning Point USA. He was attending an event at Utah Valley University when he was shot. Tyler Robinson, 22, has since been charged with aggravated murder in connection with Kirk’s death.
