Survivor 49 – Next Time On Survivor – Episode 5

Welcome to Season 49’s Next Time On Survivor weekly feature on the Inside Survivor site! If you’re new around here, I’m Steph from sunny, tropical, humid Singapore. This is a tiny space where I give my best attempts at understanding preview trailers and make my predictions for the show’s next episodes.
Before we get into this week’s predictions, here’s a quick recap of the new tribes: Sophi, Jawan, Jason, Savannah, Nate, and Rizo are left on the new Hina tribe after Matt was voted out last episode. On the new Kele tribe, we have Alex, MC, Sage, Shannon, Kristina, Sophie, and Steven.
The NTOS trailer begins with Savannah sharing, “Jawan’s annoying. He’s frantic, and I think the most likely to flip.” We then see a quick shot of Jawan walking with Jason, perhaps hinting that Jawan is going to consider an alliance with Jason, rather than with his original Uli tribemates.

The tension between Jawan and Savannah is further explored in a sneak peek scene where Savannah is clearly irritated that Jawan used her bag to collect wood back at the Uli camp and has now mistakenly taken her bottle. These may sound like petty instances that Jawan sort of brushes aside, but it’s these annoyances that cumulate to a real motivation to target someone. So far, Savannah seems to be rather decisive about whom she wishes to work with and can snarkily write someone off in a confessional. I’m sure it’s just a matter of time before she starts forming a plan to vote Jawan out with the rest of her alliance.
Also, on the new Hina tribe, after receiving two votes at the last tribal council, it’s clear that Jason’s most likely the next to go. It’s not a surprise, then, that the sneak peek scene features him explaining how he’s the last original Hina player left on the newly swapped tribe, and how he wants to break the Hina versus Uli mentality to have a shot at shaking up the majority original Uli alliance.

Unfortunately, I don’t think he’ll be very successful. There’s a very solid alliance comprising Rizo, Nate, and Savannah that I don’t think will be all that interested in straying from each other anytime soon. They’re sitting even more relaxed now with Sophi included as a number, and could have their pick between Jason or Jawan. I’m sticking to my prediction from last week that Jason will be targeted because he’s perceived to be a puzzle challenge threat.
Next, on the new Kele tribe, the NTOS trailer and sneak peek scene circles around Shannon and gives us a little insight into Sage as well. We see Shannon pitch “we get rid of Sage first” to Alex, but this is immediately undermined with a confessional from Sage plainly saying, “Shannon thinks I’m stupid,” and showing their fake embrace as Sage makes a disgusted face to the camera behind Sage’s back.
From this, I predict that if Kele goes to tribal council, we’ll essentially see something very similar happen. The old Hina versus Uli lines will stay strong, while Sage and Shannon have a go at each other. In this case, plenty of signs in the previews and Episode 4 are pointing at Shannon being overconfident, thinking she’s “making progress”, forming alliances, and overestimating her position on the tribe. We don’t see her tribemates reciprocating well or even genuinely, which leads me to believe she’ll be the easier target to pick off next.
