Partial SNAP funding coming to Monterey County next week

Monterey County officials announced that partial CalFresh benefits are expected to be issued next week, following federal authorization to release limited SNAP funding during the ongoing government shutdown.
The state is working to distribute the partial November payments during the week of Nov. 10. County officials said recipients should continue to submit all required paperwork, including semiannual reports and annual recertifications, to avoid delays when full benefits resume.
“It will take at least a week, but it could take longer so we have to wait for an update,” said Annette Gallegos, from the Department of Social Services, during the weekly county briefing on Wednesday. “We know it can be difficult for families at this time.”
More than 50,000 Monterey County residents rely on CalFresh, including about 29,000 children. The county noted that many beneficiaries are employed but still need food assistance due to reduced work hours or seasonal layoffs in agriculture and hospitality.
The Monterey County Department of Social Services is also urging eligible residents to continue applying for CalFresh. Officials said applications typically increase during November through January, but they have seen a recent decline.
“Our department has seen a decline in CalFresh applications (this year), usually from November to January we see a peak because this is a large agricultural and hospitality based community and many people see less hours or get laid off,” Gallegos said during Wednesday’s briefing. “So we want to encourage people to apply for those benefits that they are entitled to.”
In addition to the partial benefits, the county has allocated $150,000 in one-time funding to support local food banks this month. County leaders are asking cities and partner agencies to consider contributing as well.

• 1000 S. Main St., Suite 216, Salinas
