Anticipated Netflix Spinoff Series Hit With Massive Delay

Motel Transylvania needs a bit more time before it can open its doors to the public. Sony Pictures Animation has just confirmed that the upcoming Netflix series will not meet its original 2025 release window.
In a new post on the social media platform X, the studio wrote, “The gremlin wrecking crew is working overtime at the MOTEL TRANSYLVANIA. Coming to Netflix in 2027!” This marks a two-year delay for the animated series, which was first announced in June 2024. To make it up to fans for the delay, Sony’s post features a new piece of concept art for the cartoon, showing the aforementioned goblins working on the upcoming Californian resort that Dracula and his daughter are set to open in the spinoff series.
The logline for Motel Transylvania reads as follows: “Motel Transylvania is open for business, as Drac and Mavis take a break from their Transylvanian haunts to set up a brand new resort for humans and monsters in the California desert. Vampires and sunshine … what can go wrong!?” The first look at the animated series was released last year when Sony and Netflix first unveiled the project, featuring Dracula and Mavis looking down upon the titular motel from the sky.
Motel Transylvania will be the second television series released as part of the Hotel Transylvania franchise and the first of any installment to be released on Netflix. The first series, Hotel Transylvania: The Series, aired on Disney Channel for two seasons from 2017 to 2020. The cartoon was set four years before the events of the original Hotel Transylvania movie, following Mavis and her best friends as they get into shenanigans at the titular hotel while Dracula is away at the Vampire Council.
At the time of writing, it is unclear if Adam Sandler and Selena Gomez will reprise their voice roles from the Hotel Transylvania movies as Dracula and Mavis, respectively. Neither returned for The Series, with Dracula and Mavis voiced instead by David Berni & Ivan Sherry and Bryn McAuley, respectively. Sandler also didn’t return for the fourth movie, Transformania, with notable voice actor Brian Hull stepping into the role in his absence. However, given Sandler’s working relationship with Netflix, there’s a small chance the actor might return for the spinoff, although nothing has been confirmed yet.
Is a Fifth Hotel Transylvania Movie in the Works?

Hotel Transylvania has been a continued hit for Sony Pictures Animation since the first installment was released in 2012. The first movie grossed over $350 million worldwide, while the next two sequels, spaced three years apart, each surpassed the box office gross of their predecessors. Transformania was a departure from the previous trilogy, being the first not to be directed by Genndy Tartakovsky (although he co-wrote the screenplay with Amos Vernon & Nunzio Randazzo), as well as the first to be released straight-to-streaming, premiering on Prime Video in 2022.
While a fifth movie hasn’t been greenlit yet, Tartakovsky believes another sequel will get made, telling Colldier back in September 2024, “I think there’s gonna be more and more. It’s great. If there’s a demand for it, I think the fourth one did really well on Amazon. I think they want more. So we’ll see what happens.”
Motel Transylvania will now premiere on Netflix in 2027.
