Mumbai customs arrests 4 in separate drug, gold smuggling cases

In three separate cases, customs officials at Mumbai Airport arrested four people in connection with smuggling marijuana and gold, officials said on Friday.
In the first case, officials detained a passenger at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) for smuggling 5.922 kg of marijuana, valued at Rs 5.922 crore. The arrest was based on passenger profiling. The accused had arrived from Bangkok on flight SL218. During a baggage examination, Customs officers recovered the narcotic substance, which was concealed inside his checked-in trolley bag. A case has been registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

In the second case, profiling led officials to detain two passengers who arrived from Bangkok on flight AI2338 for smuggling marijuana worth over Rs 12 crore. During a baggage check, officers recovered 12.017 kg of suspected hydroponic weed, with an illicit market value of approximately Rs 12.017 crore. The narcotics were concealed inside packets of chocolates and chips. The accused were arrested under the NDPS Act.
In the third case, also reported from Mumbai airport, customs officials intercepted a passenger arriving from Dubai on flight AI2202 who had concealed gold on his body. A personal search led to the recovery of eight 24 KT crude gold bangles, weighing 225 grams and worth Rs 25.64 lakh. The gold was found concealed on his person.
