DP World Tour players will not face penalties if they want to play in LIV Golf’s promotion events for 2026, unlike PGA Tour stars.

The PGA Tour has deemed the event unauthorized, but LIV announced the third edition of their Q-School will take place on January 8 at Black Diamond Ranch in Lecanto, Florida.

In the past, these events have taken place in the Middle East, and the decision to have it in North America means that any member of the PGA Tour, Korn Ferry Tour, and Champions Tour will be sanctioned and penalized if they choose to compete due to the Tour’s media rights regulations and rules.

However, Europeans have it different. A DP World Tour spokesperson told Bunkered that as long as there is no tournament clash, members will not be required to apply for a release to play the LIV event. Each schedule of the DP World Tour and the HotelPlanner Tour’s calendars is blank the week of LIV Promotions, as that gives the players the right to play with no consequence.

Usually, members are required to apply for release per the circuit’s conflicting events rule, and that’s if a tournament elsewhere clashes with their calendar.

When LIV started their Promotions event in 2023, the DP World Tour players were told they would be fined and possibly suspended if they wanted to compete without written permission because of tournaments being held that same week.

LIV confirmed that any player who has earned a trophy on the DP World Tour in 2024 and 2025 is able to automatically qualify for round two of Promotions, and Ryder Cup players from 2021 to 2025 can skip straight to stage two.

The DP World Tour could allow players to play in LIV event in Florida in January

The LIV Golf Promotions event is deemed unauthorized by the PGA Tour, and any player with Tour status could be suspended, and even players without Tour status could be penalized.

In the PGA Tour’s regulations, it states that players can’t be granted conflicting events or media releases for tournaments staged in North America.

The event rule about playing in North America goes back to when LIV was established in 2022, when players were on the hunt for starts in what was then an individual string of tournaments.

The Tour also said on Tuesday that those without status, including those who are trying to compete on the PGA Tour Americas, would earn a one-year ban if they try to qualify for the LIV Golf League.
