Airdrie caretaker boss Aaron Taylor-Sinclair says they need to take a leaf out of St Johnstone’s book and brush up on the basics to get their season going.

The Diamonds fell to a 3-0 defeat away to the Championship leaders on Saturday, with an Adama Sidibeh hat-trick doing the damage and keeping the Monklands men bottom of the Championship.

Taylor-Sinclair’s side were left to rue a couple of early big chances which they failed to take, with Cammy Cooper denied inside the opening seconds and Chris Mochrie firing wide after a great bit of play.

Saints inflicted an eighth defeat in 13 games for managerless Airdrie and Taylor-Sinclair (pictured, right) hopes they look at aspects of St Johnstone’s performance and take it into tonight’s clash away to Partick Thistle.

He said: “That was a really good team we faced, a team that will probably go on to win the league, so we just need to dust ourselves down and look forward to Friday night.

“It is about doing the little bits we did well on Saturday and putting it into practice against Partick Thistle.

“St Johnstone did the basics really well and you can see why they are top of the league.

“We need to start doing that, things like matching runners and communicating a bit more. We need to brush up on those because that is what they do well.

“I feel like St Johnstone turned up a couple of notches in the second half.

“The first half, the first 15-20 minutes, we were more than comfortable in the game and then the game got away from us after their second goal.”

On their good start, Sinky added: “Take those chances and it’s a completely different game.

“That’s when you need to be clinical in the box. That’s what we’re hammering into the boys – hitting the back of the net.

“That could’ve been the difference. But it’s not a game that will define our season. We’ve got to focus on the teams around us. It’s a tough run – Partick Thistle next then Raith.

“But we’re more than confident of a good show at home on Friday night.”
