Proposed cash mandate might make it harder to keep cash in country towns

The Federal Government’s proposed cash mandate in its current state could create widespread confusion and is likely to adversely impact regional and remote communities.

While a cross-section of groups who gave feedback in a consultation that closed in February this year signalled ‘broad support’ for a government mandate to keep cash circulating, most indicated there was some devilish detail in the proposal that could spell disaster for regional areas.

The Australian Treasury has extended its second round of consultations to this Friday 7 November, creating a three-week window to capture public feedback . . .
