Kentucky basketball’s Mark Pope on season-opening win versus Nicholls

Kentucky basketball coach Mark Pope talks about the Wildcats’ defense after the 77-51 season-opening win against Nicholls at Rupp Arena.

LEXINGTON — Through a pair of preseason exhibitions (Purdue and Georgetown University) and Tuesday’s opening win over Nicholls, Kentucky basketball hasn’t been shy about launching 3s.

Which is the point.

UK coach Mark Pope hopes his team can hoist at least 30 triples per game.

There’s just one problem so far: The Wildcats’ aim is off.

Kentucky went 9 for 29 (31%) against Purdue. It was 7 of 30 (23.3%) versus Georgetown. And the Cats missed 20 of their 27 attempts in the win over the Colonels — a success rate of 25.9%.

UK’s 3-point shooting was especially errant in Tuesday’s first half, where it was just 2 for 16 (12.5%).

“We were a little bit of a bubbling mess, which should happen sometimes. It was everything,” Pope said of his team’s first-half offense (or lack thereof) in the opener. “We actually had some good possessions where we just didn’t finish them. We had some real stagnation. We had some misreads. … It was a lot of different things, but mostly, it was just us kind of establishing a feel for the game and really dialing in on being incredibly aggressive and (making) plays for our teammates.”

As Kentucky (1-0) prepares to host Valparaiso (1-0) tonight at Rupp Arena, perhaps help is on the way. Pope said Jaland Lowe, expected to be the team’s starting point guard this season, may return from a shoulder injury that has sidelined him since he fell to the floor during the Blue-White intrasquad scrimmage on Oct. 17.

“I think short term, it has an impact (offensively). I think long term, it’s gonna make us better,” Pope said, before continuing. “It forces you to kind of ‘dig under the hood’ and explore a bunch of things. I think sometimes having — everybody’s roster is always dynamic, right? It’s always changing. So the more it is (changing), the more you get to look in and tinker and figure things out and understand things better and in a new way.”

The Wildcats, who are No. 9 in the USA TODAY Sports Men’s Basketball Coaches Poll and AP Top 25, try to keep rolling tonight in their final outing before the Battle of the Bluegrass beckons. The Beacons, on the other hand, vie for their first win (in their third try) versus the Wildcats.
