Actor Mike Smith, best known as the character Bubbles on the television show Trailer Park Boys, has been charged with sexual assault.
Mr. Smith, 53, was charged by Halifax Regional Police on Oct. 2, according to court documents filed in Nova Scotia’s provincial court. The assault is alleged to have occurred in December, 2017, but the charging documents do not include additional details of the allegations.
The allegations have not been proven in court. Mr. Smith and his lawyer did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Friday, nor did the show’s agent and manager.
Trailer Park Boys Inc., which produces the comedy show, released a statement on Friday that said Mr. Smith had stepped away from his role as the managing director of the company.
“We are aware of the allegation concerning Mike Smith dating back to 2017 and take such matters seriously,” the statement said. “We recognize how difficult an allegation of this nature is for all involved. Out of respect for the legal process, we will not comment further on the case.”
Mr. Smith is due in court on Monday. According to the documents, he was ordered not to communicate with or visit the home, school or workplace of the alleged victim, whose name is protected by a publication ban.
A person who answered the door at a lakeside house in Dartmouth that is listed in court records confirmed that Mr. Smith lives there but declined to comment.
Trailer Park Boys is one of Nova Scotia’s most well-known cultural exports. The show has been airing since 2001, first on Showcase and, more recently, on Netflix after Mr. Smith and fellow lead actors Robb Wells and John Paul Tremblay acquired rights to the show. There have also been numerous tie-in movies and events. Mr. Smith is known primarily for his coke-bottle-glasses-wearing character Bubbles.
While the main show went on hiatus after its 12th season began streaming on Netflix in 2018, various spinoff content has continued to be released regularly through a proprietary streaming service relaunched this summer as Trailer Park Boys+.
Production recently wrapped on a 13th season, produced in association with Blink49 Studios, with a planned release timed to the show’s 25th anniversary in spring 2026.
Mr. Smith was arrested and charged in 2016 with misdemeanour domestic battery in Los Angeles over an alleged incident involving a woman at a Hollywood hotel.
He denied the allegations, describing what happened as a “loud and heated dispute” with a friend. The public attorney’s office said a month later that it had dropped the charges.
