WFAN host leaks Brian Daboll firing decision that got nixed: ‘Fired off the plane’

The Giants’ 19-point collapse against the Denver Broncos in Week 7 led to head coach Brian Daboll being fired by ownership, a decision that was later reversed, according to radio host Shaun Morash of WFAN.
Morash, who appeared on the station’s afternoon show “Evan and Tiki” on Thursday afternoon, said he learned Daboll was fired after the game, but the decision was eventually reversed.
“I’ve done some digging around and I’ve now gotten this from multiple people I trust, which is why I’m going to come here with it,” Morash said. “The Giants were firing Brian Daboll off the plane after the collapse in Denver. He was fired. Ownership got together and cooler heads prevailed. They decided not to fire Brian Daboll off the plane in Denver.”
“In the immediacy of that collapse, the decision to throw on third-and-5, like (co-host) Tiki (Barber) had crushed after that game, apparently that was enough from people of importance with the Giants that he was fired off the plane in Denver and cooler heads have prevailed, which has now led to stories about the split ticket. Brian Daboll is as good as gone and was basically gone two weeks ago if not for somebody stepping up within ownership and calming that down.”
Morash added that the person (or people) who wanted Daboll fired did not include general manager Joe Schoen.
“Making the decision to fire him was not Joe Schoen in that moment, but you could surmise from there … ownership,” Morash said.
Daboll was already on thin ice with owner John Mara after finishing 3-14 last season, with Mara threatening to fire Daboll if things did not get better. Morash’s mention of a “split ticket” suggests ownership may keep general manager Joe Schoen but let Daboll go.
“It better not take too long, because I’ve just about run out of patience,” Mara said in January.
Despite the emergence of rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart, the Giants are 2-7 and in last place in the NFC East, making it likely Daboll is coaching his final gamest Daboll is coaching his final games with the team barring a dramatic turnaround in the second half of the season. The Giants’ next game will be Sunday at 1 p.m. ET when they travel to face the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field.
