After a quieter couple of weeks, the box office is back with a bang this weekend, as several eye-catching titles join the circuit. Dan Trachtenberg‘s Predator: Badlands is most likely going to top the box office charts, as millions flock to their local theaters to check out his third movie in the series. Elsewhere, those tuned into the claims that Sydney Sweeney might earn an Oscar nomination will be excited to finally watch her transformational role in the sports biopic Christy, and Jennifer Lawrence teams up with Robert Pattinson and LaKeith Stanfield in Die My Love. 3

‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ (2017)

Rotten Tomatoes: 92% | IMDb: 7.4/10

We are just over a year away from Avengers: Doomsday, with Collider exclusively revealing that the first trailer for the movie will drop on December 19, 2025. To get yourself in the Marvel mood ahead of the trailer, why not check out one of the best modern movies on Prime Video this weekend? Spider-Man: Homecoming follows Tom Holland’s Peter Parker as he attempts to juggle saving the world with the anxieties of high school. When a terrifying new villain arrives, threatening the lives of those he loves, Spider-Man faces his toughest challenge yet.

Like a blend between a John Hughes movie and a classic MCU tale, Spider-Man: Homecoming has a little bit for everyone. Holland is at his spidey-sensing best in Homecoming, joined by a stacked ensemble that includes Michael Keaton as Adrian Toomes, a.k.a. The Vulture. A blend of action, sci-fi, and adventure provides a gripping but never too serious viewing experience that will keep anyone thoroughly entertained this weekend.

2

‘Happy Gilmore’ (1996)

Rotten Tomatoes: 65% | IMDb: 7.0/10

Your working week was hard, and you need something easy to help you escape this weekend. There is no better option than Happy Gilmore, one of the best comedies of the ’90s. Adam Sandler stars as the titular hockey player turned budding golfer, who promises to earn back his recently repossessed grandmother’s house by winning the biggest golfing prize. However, Happy is lacking in golfing prowess, except that he has the most impressive drive anyone has ever seen, a combination that quickly earns him a fierce rival in Shooter McGavin (Christopher McDonald).

Featuring one of the best comedy cameos from Bob Barker and an iconic supporting performance from Carl Weathers as Happy’s coach, Happy Gilmore is brilliant comedy chaos. As one of Sandler’s best comedy creations, Happy is both endearing and frustrating, making for an often hapless and always hilarious lead who you never stop wanting to root for. With the recent legacy sequel dominating the streaming charts and bringing more eyes back on this franchise, there’s no better time to watch the original than now.

1

‘Hanna’ (2011)

Rotten Tomatoes: 71% | IMDb: 6.7/10

Saoirse Ronan is one of the best actors working today, and she has been showcasing that talent since she was much younger. Back when she was a teenager, Ronan teamed up with Pride & Prejudice and Atonement director Joe Wright for the 2011 action thriller Hanna. The movie follows Ronan’s titular sixteen-year-old, who, raised by her father, Erik Heller (Eric Bana), to be the perfect assassin, is sent on a mission that will put her skills to the test and her life on the line.

Heavily inspired by Grimms’ Fairy Tales, this thrilling, globetrotting adventure might feature Ronan when she was still relatively inexperienced, but her raw talent shines throughout. In her first action movie, Ronan produces the sort of range, weaving between cold violence and touching emotion, that would soon become synonymous with her. A pulse-racing story that is both action-heavy and a nuanced coming-of-age tale, Hanna is sure to keep you on the edge of your seat this weekend.
