Traffic police have e-challaned 68 police mobile drivers in Karachi over the past 13 days for violating traffic rules, 24NewsHD reported on Saturday.
Officials said the e-challans were issued for not wearing seatbelts and using mobile phones while driving. The move comes as the city’s automated e-challan system continues to target all violators, including law enforcement personnel.
Meanwhile, Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Karachi chief Munam Zafar and others have challenged the e-challan system in the Sindh High Court (SHC). The petition, filed by Advocate Usman Farooq, argues that the system — based on AI and surveillance cameras — unfairly fines vehicle owners instead of actual drivers.
The petition further claims that the government implemented the system without improving road infrastructure, verifying vehicle ownership, or installing proper traffic signs. It also calls the steep increase in fines, license suspensions, and ID card blocks “unlawful.”
It added that many vehicles in Karachi and Sindh still operate under open letters, with excise records reflecting previous owners, creating confusion in fine collection.
