Barstool boss threatens to pull company from NYC over ‘communist’ Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani
Barstool founder Dave Portnoy knew the NYC mayoral election was over before it started. By the time all the ballots had been cast, it was clear that Democrat Zohran Mamdani would be the next mayor of the Big Apple.
For most New Yorkers, this was a moment to celebrate. For others, like Portnoy, it was time to hit the panic button.
During a livestream of Michigan at Michigan State on Wednesday, Portnoy conceded victory to Mamdani before the results were officially in. Asked by a viewer if he’d close Barstool’s office in New York, here’s what Portnoy had to say:
“Honestly, I’ve given that a lot of thought — he’s definitely going to win — going to Hoboken or Jersey City or something,” Portnoy said, via YouTube. “I don’t want to f—ing have an office (in Manhattan). But then we have all those people who, like, that f—s up their life because I hate the guy. Like all the people in the New York office have to go to Jersey City or … Hoboken. So it’s a Catch-22. …
“I can’t stand the thought of (Mamdani) running New York City. I can’t stand it. But then a part of me is like, how much will actually change? But I really have given it thought. I told our finance guys to start looking around for property, no joke. Take a principled stand. Thirty-something-year-old Communist running New York City who’s never had a job in his life, hates America, doesn’t seem like the best.”
Later, after Mamdani was officially declared the winner, Portnoy took to X (Twitter) to express his feelings about the election.
“Thank god I don’t live there anymore,” Portnoy wrote over a video of CNN’s Scott Jennings rebuking NYC’s choice for mayor.
