2016 Flashback: Texas Tech’s Joey McGuire on the High School Football America Radio Show

Texas Tech may be playing its biggest college football game ever today when it hosts BYU. The Red Raiders are No. 8 in the first 2025 College Football Playoff Rankings. BYU is No. 7 in the eyes of the College Football Playoff selection committee.
Former Texas high school football coach Joey McGuire has been building up the Lubbock program since taking over as head coach in 2022.
McGuire is no stranger to building a program. During his time at Cedar Hill High School, the 54-year old built the Longhorns into a national high school football power. Prior to arriving at Cedar Hill, the school, southwest of Dallas, had little success and had never won a playoff game. When he left to take an assistant coaching job at Baylor University, McGuire had led the school to four state championships, amassing a record of 141-42.
His 2013 state championship team finished No. 7 in the High School Football America Top 25. The Longhorns finished No. 11 in the HSFA 25 national rankings.
On August 4, 2016, McGuire’s team was ranked No. 3 in our the Preseason HSFA 50 and Coach McGuire joined me on the High School Football America Radio show. You can listen to that interview below.
